Martin Luther King Jr. was born Michael King Jr. on 15 January 1929 in Atlanta. The bus boycott in Montgomery began after Rosa Parks was arrested on 1 December 1955. He was the public voice of that year-long refusal.
On 28 August 1963 he spoke from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial at the March on Washington. In 1964 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965 are the laws a magazine can point at without turning the man into a slogan.
He was shot on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis on 4 April 1968. He was 39. The photograph is the 1964 portrait.
